Balayage is a French coloring technique that was developed in the 1970’s. It’s a freehand technique where the color in applied by hand rather than using the traditional foiling or cap highlighting techniques. Balayage is very versatile and can be used on the shortest of hair to very long.
What is Balayage?
You can achieve so many different affects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and punky. The fact it’s so low in maintenance is such a drawcard for women too. People want to look fashionable and feel good about their appearance but in this day and age we don’t all have the time to be in the hair salon every few weeks. It’s also a very economical way to color your hair as you don’t have the solid demarcation line you do frim normal highlights or regular regrowth, so if you can’t afford to get it done for another month it won’t look atrocious. However if your Balayage is not done correctly you can end up with excessive overlapping that can cause damage.
Balayage Process
The process varies depending on the length of the hair and the desired result. You can expect to have individual strands colored with a brush and a backing board. Some colorist like to separate their sections with cotton or foils, others tease the hair in sections first then freehand color the ends.
I find that all my clients are going for different looks and need to maintain it at different rates. Depending on how long you go in between appointments you may need to come in for a toner and a treatment to freshen up the color. There are many different techniques that can help create this look is you have natural or previously colored hair. The color specialist should always be able to come up with a technique and formula best suited for your hair to achieve your desired look.
